German Defense Minister: Trump’s military spending ratio requirement cannot be afforded

On February 1st, German Defense Minister Pistorius stated on Saturday that Germany cannot afford to increase military spending to 5% of GDP, which is exactly what US President Donald Trump has demanded of NATO member countries. Pistorius pointed out that military spending of 5% of GDP is equivalent to 42% of Germany’s federal budget, which is 230 billion euros, and Germany “cannot afford and cannot spend money like this”.
