On April 18th, the United Nations Security Council issued a statement on April 17th local time, expressing serious concern over the escalation of violence in the Sudan region, especially the situation in El Fasher city and surrounding areas of Northern Darfur state. The statement strongly condemns the recent multiple attacks by the Sudan Rapid Support Force on El Fasher city and internally displaced persons camps. There are reports that the related attacks have caused at least 400 civilian deaths, including children and at least 11 humanitarian aid workers. The Security Council expresses deep concern about this and calls for accountability of the Sudan Rapid Support Force. The statement stated that the members of the Security Council reiterated the requirements of Resolution 2736, urging the Sudan Rapid Support Force to immediately lift the siege on El Fasher city, calling for an immediate ceasefire and easing of local tensions.
