Guterres calls on the world to firmly fulfill climate commitments and accelerate the transition to clean energy

On April 24th, UN Secretary General Guterres delivered a speech after the Leaders’ Summit on Climate and Justice Transition, emphasizing that in the context of multiple global crises, countries must firmly fulfill their climate commitments, accelerate the transition to clean energy, and not let climate action deviate from its course. Guterres proposed two specific initiatives: first, countries should accelerate the submission of a new round of national climate plans and ensure that these plans are strong enough and have coverage. He called for countries to set emission reduction targets that cover all greenhouse gases and the entire economy, consistent with the 1.5 degree Celsius temperature control target, and accelerate a fair transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Secondly, countries should strengthen their support for developing countries. Guterres pointed out that Africa and Pacific island countries are facing faster climate change and rising sea levels. However, despite possessing 60% of the world’s high-quality solar energy resources, Africa only accounts for 1.5% of the world’s solar energy installed capacity and receives only 2% of renewable energy investment.
