Chinese Enterprises Assist in Building Water Supply Facilities to Help Sri Lankan Villagers Drink Safe Water

Colombo, February 27th (Xinhua) — The Meitarama drinking water supply system, built with the assistance of China State Construction Engineering Corporation Sri Lanka Branch, has recently been put into operation, providing stable and clean water supply to about 250 rural households in Mahamigaswawa and Namarpura, Habarana Administrative District, North Central Province, Sri Lanka. More than a thousand villagers have benefited from it.

Prior to this, these rural communities mainly relied on old water wells and other facilities for water intake. Due to insufficient pumping capacity and frequent electrical system failures, water supply is frequently interrupted during the dry season, forcing some residents to access untreated water sources.

China State Construction Engineering Corporation Sri Lanka Branch launched the water supply project in January and collaborated with the Mahaweli Authority and the National Water Supply and Drainage Commission to promote it. Yi Chengzhi, the project manager of the 27.7-kilometer water diversion tunnel of the Erehele Canal in Sri Lanka, which was constructed by China State Construction Engineering Corporation, introduced that the project will renovate and prevent pollution from existing water wells, build a 20000 liter water storage facility, lay about 3.6 kilometers of pipeline network, connect water sources to each household, and install independent water meters. Simultaneously lay 400 meters of three-phase power lines and equip two high-pressure water pumps to ensure stable water supply. After the completion of the project, pressure, electrical, and pumping tests were conducted to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the system, in compliance with local rural water supply standards.

With the operation of the water supply system, the daily lives of villagers have quietly changed. Previously, there was not enough water during the dry season, and everyone had to queue up to receive water. Now every household has access to household water supply, making it convenient to use water, “said villager Nimra.

The improvement of water supply conditions brings not only convenience in daily life. With a significant reduction in water intake time, farmers can devote more energy to agricultural production; Stable and clean water sources also reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, further improving the local public health situation and providing stronger guarantees for community production and life.

Using engineering expertise to solve practical difficulties for villagers is an important way for enterprises to participate in local co construction, “said Liu Bingquan, the main person in charge of China Construction Sri Lanka Company. In the future, they will continue to leverage their professional advantages to provide necessary support for improving the living conditions of local communities.
