On May 3rd, the media office in the Gaza Strip announced that the Israeli military has closed Gaza’s border crossings for 63 consecutive days, causing the death toll from hunger and severe malnutrition in the area to rise to 57 people, the vast majority of whom are children, the sick, and the elderly. The department stated that Israel continues to blockade Gaza, preventing aid supplies such as infant formula, nutritional supplements, and dozens of medicines from entering, and it is expected that the related death toll will continue to increase. The department strongly condemns Israel’s continued use of food as a weapon of war and the brutal blockade imposed on civilians in the Gaza Strip, and calls on the international community, humanitarian organizations, and human rights organizations to take immediate and effective action, exert all possible pressure, open border crossings, and ensure that food and medicine enter as soon as possible.
