On May 10th, members of the ruling party in South Korea voted against the presidential candidate replacement plan, and Kim Won soo’s candidacy was immediately restored. Due to the unsuccessful negotiations on the joint selection of a candidate for the presidential election between the ruling National Power Party presidential candidate Kim Won soo and the independent presidential candidate and former Prime Minister Han Deok soo on the evening of May 9th, the National Power Party held meetings for the National Assembly, Emergency Response Committee, and Election Response Committee late that night. At the emergency response committee held in the early morning of the 10th, the National Power Party decided to cancel Kim Won soo’s candidacy for the presidential election and handle the procedures for Han Deok soo to join the party and register as a presidential candidate. This is the first time in the constitutional history of South Korea that a political party has entered the presidential candidate re-election process.
