Almaty, May 28th (Xinhua) – Journalist’s Notes | Experience the Vitality of Green Development by the Turgusun River
In the northern part of the Altay Mountains and the hilly area of East Kazakhstan in Kazakhstan, coniferous forests rise and fall along the mountain. Amidst the lush greenery, the Turgusun River flows in rapids. In May, this river, which is difficult to tame among the local population, experienced a spring flood.

It is currently the flood season, which is the season with the highest power generation of the Turgusun Hydropower Station, “Sun Peng, Deputy General Manager of China Water Resources and Electric Power International Co., Ltd. (referred to as HydroChina) Kazakhstan Branch of China Communications Construction Corporation, told Xinhua News Agency.
The Turgusun Hydropower Station is constructed by hydropower companies and started construction in January 2017. It was put into operation and started generating electricity in July 2021. It is an important project jointly built by China and Kazakhstan under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. For this project, Sun Peng and his colleagues worked hard in this sparsely populated mountainous area for four and a half years.

As the director of the engineering department during the construction period of the hydropower station, Sun Peng has an installed capacity of 24900 kilowatts, an average annual power generation of 79.8 million kilowatt hours, and an average annual reduction of 72000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The Turgusun Hydropower Station has filled half of the electricity gap in the Altai region of Donghai Prefecture, effectively promoting the local green and low-carbon transformation
During the conversation, a bee flew past Sun Peng and stopped on a nearby wildflower. As a species highly sensitive to ecology, the appearance of bees often signifies fresh air, clean water sources, and lush vegetation. Donghazhou is famous for producing honey, and there are also many beekeepers around the hydropower station.

When I went out to check the surroundings, I saw bears, deer, and foxes, “said Nebomiashchi, the on-site dispatcher of Turgusun Hydropower Station.” There are quite a few wild animals in the nearby mountains. A while ago, a deer came to the entrance of our warehouse and stayed for a long time
The Turgusun hydropower station machine room adopts a blue exterior coating, like a blue enamel embedded among the mountains. The biggest feature of Turgusun Hydropower Station is environmental protection, “said Maksut, the general manager of the hydropower station owner.” Kazakhstan has actively developed clean energy in recent years, and we are promoting the construction and operation of hydropower stations without damaging the ecological environment or sacrificing beautiful scenery

In order to protect the integrity of the surrounding pristine forests, the team integrated environmental protection into the entire lifecycle of the project. At the beginning of construction, it was decided to compress the work area to within 150 meters south of the power station; Regularly inspect all construction vehicles to ensure that their exhaust emissions meet the standards; Establish sedimentation tanks to treat construction wastewater, and discharge is only allowed if the water quality meets Class II water standards.
Thanks to the strict environmental standards set by the construction teams of China and Kazakhstan, rare cold water fish such as wild fennel fish and Zhe Luo salmon have thrived in the Turgusun River.

Nebomiashchi led the reporter into the central control room, where large and small screens displayed real-time information on the operation of the hydropower station. Many of the screens monitored the hydroelectric generator sets – two large and one small generators – which are the “heart” of the entire hydropower station operation. He introduced, “We rarely use oil injection devices, and the risk of oil pollution is almost zero. To ensure this, we have never interrupted our inspection and monitoring
From protecting the ecological environment to promoting technological cooperation, the Turgusun hydropower station demonstrates the depth and warmth of cross-border cooperation, providing a reference solution for more clean energy projects. Sun Peng told reporters that hydropower will continue to deepen cooperation with its partners in Kazakhstan to jointly build other hydropower projects in Donghai Prefecture and continue to support the local green transformation and development.

Starting from the banks of the Turgusun River, more hydropower projects are being promoted, turning the vision of clean energy into reality and witnessing the continuous expansion of China Kazakhstan cooperation between mountains and rivers. The green development story that belongs to this land is still being written.
