Accra, September 12 (Xinhua) — Compassionate Heart and Techniques Under the Shadowless Lamp – Record of the 14th Batch of Chinese Medical Teams to Aid Ghana

It was Chinese doctors who saved us, and we will never forget, “said Jeffrey Lequi, a child who received and recovered from the 14th batch of medical team’s umbilical hernia repair surgery in Canada, holding the flags of China and Ghana and speaking with emotion.

Recently, under the shadow of the operating room of the China Canada Friendship Hospital in Accra, the capital of Ghana, the 14th batch of Canadian aid Chinese medical teams and the Ghanaian team successfully completed umbilical hernia repair for two AIDS orphans.

Yang Yongguang, the leader of the medical team, said that when the medical team went to the orphanage for free clinic in June this year, two children with AIDS were found with abnormal abdomen, and they were diagnosed as umbilical hernia and at risk of intestinal necrosis.

According to John Azuma, the director of the orphanage, the sick children Lequi and Apia Prinses were sent to the orphanage due to the death of both parents. They suffered from umbilical hernia since childhood, but they were discriminated against for a long time due to their AIDS background, and the orphanage was short of funds, so the treatment was delayed again and again.

Adhering to the belief of “compassion of doctors”, the medical team decisively decided to treat two sick children and immediately formulated a treatment plan. Faced with financial difficulties in the orphanage, the medical team quickly coordinated with Chinese charitable organizations in Ghana to provide full funding and successfully completed the surgery.

On the second day after surgery, the two children were able to get out of bed and move around on their own, with good wound healing, normal eating, and smooth recovery. Dean Azuma said after seeing the children’s recovery, “Their hernias have finally been cured. The Chinese medical team’s fearless act of kindness has shown us the true boundless love

The medical team has been stationed at the China Canada Friendship Hospital for over 6 months. The team members have overcome various difficulties and completed more than 180 surgeries, including laparoscopic appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and inguinal hernia repair. They have also participated in the rescue of 50 critically ill patients and completed nearly 40 cataract surgeries in the ophthalmology department. In July of this year, the medical team successfully completed Ghana’s first laparoscopic transabdominal hernia repair surgery.

In addition to daily medical work and free clinics, since December 2022, the Chinese medical team assisting Ghana has launched the “Minimally Invasive in Ghana, Bright View of the World” project. In the past three years, this project has been continuously deepened, not only bringing brightness to local patients, but also committed to truly keeping advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques in Ghana.

Considering the lack of senior physicians with the ability to guide and teach laparoscopic surgery in the Sino Canadian Friendship Hospital, and the lack of opportunities for systematic and standardized laparoscopic technology training for local medical staff, the 14th batch of medical teams has conducted multiple laparoscopic technology training sessions since starting their work, striving to promote the transition from “blood transfusion” to “hematopoiesis”.

In addition, the medical team has innovatively launched the “small texture” tool, which transforms obscure and difficult to understand technical specifications into intuitive and understandable visual guides. Once the stickers were posted, they immediately received unanimous praise from the surgical director, surgeon, and nursing team.

Yang Yongguang said, “On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada and the 10th anniversary of the Chinese medical team rooting in the China Canada Friendship Hospital, the Chinese medical team will continue to promote the construction of a China Africa health community with benevolence and compassion, and continue to contribute to the promotion of China Africa cooperation
