Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng led a delegation from Shanghai to visit Macau, where they met with the Chief Executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region, He Yicheng, and signed six agreements

Looking ahead, the prospects for cooperation between Shanghai and Australia are even broader.

The Shanghai delegation led by Gong Zheng, Deputy Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Mayor, visited Macau from April 28th to 29th. Gong Zheng met with the Chief Executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region, He Yicheng, and the Director of the Liaison Office of the Central Government in Macau, Zheng Xincong, to inspect the urban development planning, historical landscape protection, community medical and health conditions of Macau. During the visit, Gong Zheng and He Yicheng witnessed the signing of six agreements between Shanghai and the Macao Special Administrative Region in areas such as health, meteorology, education, and arbitration cooperation.

When meeting with He Yicheng, Gong Zheng said that Shanghai and Macau have close relations and frequent exchanges. Especially since the establishment of the Shanghai Australia Cooperation Conference mechanism in 2019, exchanges and cooperation between the two regions have become closer. Currently, Shanghai is focusing on the important mission of building the “Five Centers”, deepening high-level reform and opening up, promoting high-quality development, and accelerating the construction of a socialist modern international metropolis with global influence. Looking ahead, the prospects for cooperation between Shanghai and Australia are even broader. We are willing to work with Macao to seize the high-quality development opportunity of jointly building the “the Belt and Road”, strengthen resource complementarity and mutual learning of experience, strive to achieve more results of cooperation, and work together to make greater contributions to serving the overall development of the country. We hope to strengthen economic, trade and industrial cooperation, carry out practical cooperation around fields such as biomedicine, finance, and exhibition, promote the establishment of close connections between universities and research institutions in the two regions, and promote the optimization and upgrading of industrial structure. At the same time, Shanghai and Macau are both places where Chinese and Western cultures converge, embodying both international style and Eastern charm. We hope to strengthen cultural and tourism cooperation, so that the citizens of the two places can appreciate each other’s urban charm.

He Yicheng expressed gratitude to the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Government for their long-term concern and support for the development of Macau. The SAR government is actively implementing the “1+4” moderately diversified development strategy, focusing on promoting the development of four major industries: big health, modern finance, high-tech, exhibition and trade, and cultural and sports. It is also accelerating the construction of the Hengqin Guangdong Macao Deep Cooperation Zone. With the strong support of the central government, Macao and the Shenzhen Cooperation Zone enjoy multiple preferential measures, including the recently launched “Announcement of the National Immigration Administration on Implementing Several Policy Measures for Further Convenient and Enterprising Entry and Exit Management”, which injects new impetus into the integrated development of Macao and Qinhuangdao and promotes the diversification of Macao’s economy, and helps Macao further integrate into the overall development of the country and the construction of the Greater Bay Area. Since its establishment in 2019, the Shanghai Australia Cooperation Conference mechanism has laid a solid foundation for cooperation between the two regions, and both sides have continuously expanded and deepened exchanges and cooperation in various fields. Macao will continue to leverage its unique advantages and work together with Shanghai in key areas to create broader cooperation prospects in the future.

During the visit, Gong Zheng inspected the urban development plan of Macau, learned about the protection of historical buildings and scenery, listened in detail to the introduction of Macau’s future plans, and encouraged Shanghai enterprises to actively participate in serving Macau’s urban development and construction. The city leaders also went to the Lower Ring Health Center in Macau to conduct on-site inspections of chronic disease clinics, healthcare, traditional Chinese medicine and other medical services, to understand the overall situation and innovative experience of community healthcare in Macau.
