National Postal Administration: In 2023, the postal industry’s business revenue reached 1529.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 13.2%

On May 10th, the National Postal Administration released a statistical report on the development of the postal industry in 2023.

Business development situation

(1) Business scale

In 2023, the postal industry completed a mailing volume of 162.48 billion items, a year-on-year increase of 16.8%. Among them, the express delivery business volume completed 132.07 billion items, a year-on-year increase of 19.4%.

In 2023, the postal group completed 970 million mail transactions, a year-on-year increase of 2.7%; The package business volume completed 24.726 million pieces, a year-on-year increase of 40.7%; The subscription and sales of newspapers reached 16.7 billion copies, a year-on-year increase of 0.8%; The subscription and sales of magazine business reached 650 million copies, a year-on-year decrease of 5.9%; The foreign exchange business completed 3.489 million transactions, a year-on-year decrease of 19.5%.

In 2023, the postal industry’s business revenue (excluding direct operating revenue of Postal Savings Bank) reached 1529.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 13.2%. Among them, the revenue from express delivery business reached 1207.4 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 14.3%. The proportion of express delivery revenue to the total industry revenue was 79.0%, an increase of 0.8 percentage points from the previous year.

The brand concentration index CR8 for express and parcel services is 84.0.

(2) Business structure

In 2023, the local express delivery business volume completed 13.64 billion items, a year-on-year increase of 6.6%; The volume of long-distance express delivery business completed 115.36 billion pieces, a year-on-year increase of 20.5%; The international/Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan express delivery business volume completed 3.07 billion items, a year-on-year increase of 52.0%. The proportion of express delivery business volume in the same city, different regions, and international/Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan is 10.3%, 87.4%, and 2.3%, respectively.

(3) Regional structure

The proportion of express delivery business volume in the eastern, central, and western regions is 75.2%, 16.7%, and 8.1% respectively, and the proportion of express delivery business revenue is 76.2%, 14.1%, and 9.7%, respectively. The eastern region completed 99.31 billion parcels of express delivery business, a year-on-year increase of 16.9%; Completed a business revenue of 920.21 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 12.3%. The central region completed 22.12 billion parcels of express delivery business, a year-on-year increase of 27.5%; Completed business revenue of 170.24 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 20.1%. The top five provinces in terms of express delivery business volume are Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Hebei, with a total proportion of express delivery business volume accounting for 64.0% of the total express delivery business volume, a decrease of 1.8 percentage points compared to the top five provinces last year. The top five provinces in terms of express delivery revenue are Guangdong, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Shandong, with the total proportion of express delivery revenue accounting for 63.3% of all express delivery revenue, a decrease of 1.4 percentage points compared to the top five provinces last year.

The top 15 cities in terms of express delivery volume are Jinhua (Yiwu), Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Jieyang, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Dongguan, Shantou, Suzhou, Quanzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, Wenzhou, Changsha, and Wuhan, with a total express delivery volume accounting for 49.3% of the total express delivery volume.

The top 15 cities in terms of express delivery revenue are Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Jinhua (Yiwu), Hangzhou, Dongguan, Beijing, Suzhou, Foshan, Jieyang, Chengdu, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Tianjin, and Shantou, with their total express delivery revenue accounting for 54.4% of all express delivery revenue.

Service capability and service level

(1) Institutional equipment

Enterprises in the entire industry have established 468000 various types of business outlets, an increase of 34000 compared to the end of the previous year. The per capita annual express delivery usage is 93.7 items. Each hundred people have a subscription of 7.6 newspapers and magazines. Among them, the per capita annual postal expenditure is 1084.9 yuan, and the per capita middle-aged express delivery expenditure is 856.5 yuan.
