Walking in Ulaanbaatar: Witnessing the Friendship between China and Mongolia through the Benefit to the People Project

At a construction site near Green Lake in Sukhbaatar District, Ulaanbaatar City, the capital of Mongolia, a 60 year old herder named Chao Geze is standing on tiptoe, looking at the residential building in front of him that is about to be completed, holding a floor plan tightly in his hand.

I heard we’ll be moving in soon, so I’ll come and take a look every few days, “she pointed to the balcony marked on the blueprint, her eyes sparkling.” In the future, I’ll plant flowers here and let my grandson run on the grass downstairs. I won’t be like now, where the roof leaks on rainy days.

The new home that Chaogezege hopes to move into is the “Green Lake 1008 Residential Area” project, a shantytown renovation project supported by China in Ulaanbaatar, constructed by China Second Metallurgical Group Corporation. The aid construction project planned to be delivered in August this year is bringing 1008 families step by step towards their dream of “greatly improving their living conditions”.

In addition to constructing residential buildings, the project also includes supporting infrastructure such as water and power supply, as well as public service facilities such as community service centers, kindergartens, and small green spaces, to comprehensively improve living conditions and convenience, “said Li Haofei, the person in charge of the project contractor.

The “Green Lake 1008 Residential Area” project is one of the many Chinese aid projects in Mongolia. In recent years, China has completed multiple aid projects in Mongolia, such as the new airport expressway and the rehabilitation and development center for disabled children, to support Mongolia’s development and ensure people’s livelihoods.

At the Rehabilitation and Development Center for Disabled Children in Mongolia, there are children who come to seek medical treatment from time to time. The head of the center, Ugangqiqige, said that in the past six years of operation, the center has treated more than 40000 children with disabilities. China has also continued to donate materials and provide training, improving the health level of disabled children.

China’s medical assistance to Mongolia is highly welcomed by the Mongolian people. From May 21 to 23 this year, the “the Belt and Road · Bright Travel” Mongolian action in 2025 will go into Ulaanbaatar to carry out screening and other work for local cataract patients. According to the screening results, 120 eligible Mongolian cataract patients came to the People’s Hospital of Erenhot City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China in late June to undergo free restoration surgery.

Dorje Sulun, a 68 year old resident of Ulaanbaatar, is one of the patients who can clearly see the text in the newspaper after undergoing surgery in Erenhot. The surgery was very successful. After a complete recovery, I will go to more places in China to explore, “said Dorje Sulun.

As a transnational humanitarian cooperation brand project jointly built by the Red Cross Society of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the Mongolian Red Cross Society, the “the Belt and Road · Bright Travel” Mongolian Action has successfully implemented 645 free vision restoration operations for Mongolian cataract patients since its launch in 2019.
