The equipment for Namibia’s first grid side energy storage project, constructed by a Chinese enterprise, has arrived at the port

Windhoek, October 15th (Xinhua) — The first batch of equipment for Namibia’s first grid side energy storage project, the Ombru electrochemical energy storage system project, which was constructed by a Chinese enterprise, successfully arrived at Whale Bay Port in the western part of the country on the 14th, marking a crucial step for Namibia in modernizing its power system and transitioning to clean energy.

The Namibian National Power Company stated that the equipment arriving at the port this time includes 8 power conversion systems and air conditioning unit containers. The battery compartment supporting the project will arrive in October, and the remaining 33 devices will be delivered gradually within the year.

In December 2023, State Grid Corporation of China signed a contract for the Ombulu energy storage project with a consortium of Shandong Electric Power Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Electric Equipment, and Zhejiang Nandu Power Supply Co., Ltd.

At the equipment handover ceremony held at Whale Bay Port on the 14th, representatives from State Grid Corporation of China and Shandong Electric Power Group witnessed the arrival of the first batch of equipment.

The Ombru Energy Storage Project is located in central northern Namibia, with a designed storage capacity of 51 megawatt hours. It can release electricity to the grid during peak hours and provide peak shaving and stable support for renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. The project is expected to be completed and put into operation in the second quarter of 2026.
