Interview | Becoming a BRICS partner brings’ strategic opportunities’ to Cuba

Havana, July 2 (Xinhua) — Exclusive Interview | Becoming a BRICS partner brings “strategic opportunities” to Cuba – Visit to Cuba by China expert Ricardo

Becoming a BRICS partner brings’ strategic opportunities’ for Cuba, which not only helps promote Cuba’s economic development, but also deepens cooperation among countries in the global South, injecting new impetus into the construction of a more just and reasonable international order, “Eduardo Regarado, a China expert at the Cuban International Policy Research Center, said in a recent interview with Xinhua News Agency.

On January 1, 2025, Cuba officially became a BRICS partner country. Legarado pointed out that in the context of the accelerated division of the global landscape and the continued blockade of Cuba by the United States, the BRICS mechanism provides an important channel for Cuba to break isolation and expand development space.

Legarado pointed out that the BRICS countries have been continuously promoting the reform of the global governance system in recent years, emphasizing the representation and voice of developing countries, and advocating the construction of an international order that does not interfere in internal affairs, respects sovereignty, and promotes win-win cooperation. These concepts are highly consistent with Cuba’s long-standing diplomatic stance.

Legarado stated that the BRICS mechanism will help Cuba strengthen cooperation with BRICS member countries in areas such as economy, technology, healthcare, and infrastructure, especially by obtaining more flexible financing support through platforms such as the BRICS New Development Bank, enhancing sustainable development and risk resistance. He also pointed out that Cuba’s unique geographical location can provide a bridge for BRICS countries to expand their markets in Latin America and the Caribbean, promoting two-way exchanges and mutual benefit.

Legarado said that Cuba has engaged in substantive cooperation with BRICS countries such as China in the fields of biotechnology and agriculture, and has the potential for further development.

As an expert who has studied China’s issues for a long time, Regardeau said that China plays an increasingly important role in international affairs, providing development experience, technology and investment to countries in the South through the joint construction of the “the Belt and Road” initiative to promote common prosperity.

He pointed out that the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind proposed by China is gradually being implemented under the BRICS framework. Through multilateral mechanisms such as think tank forums, healthcare, clean energy, and technological cooperation, BRICS countries have established closer economic and cultural ties, transcending geopolitical confrontation and providing a new path for win-win cooperation among countries.
