Kuala Lumpur, March 17 (Xinhua) — The Kota Bharu to Gombak section of the Malaysia East Coast Railway (MCA) project, constructed by a Chinese enterprise, was officially laid on the 16th, marking the beginning of the system installation, testing, and commissioning phase and laying the foundation for its opening and operation.

Amir Hamza Azizan, the Second Minister of Finance of Malaysia, stated at the track laying ceremony that the 519 kilometer section of the Kota Bharu to Ngo Ma section of the track has been completed ahead of schedule, demonstrating efficient collaboration and close cooperation between Malaysia and China.

The Chief Secretary of the Malaysian government, Azri, stated that the Malaysia East Rail is not only a strategic asset of Malaysia, but also a symbol of close cooperation between Malaysia and China. After the completion of the railway, it will bring a more modern, efficient, and safe travel experience to the public, and bring about changes to Malaysia’s transportation system.

Deng Bo, General Manager of the Ma Dong Railway Project of China Communications Construction Group Co., Ltd. (CCCC), stated that with the completion of the track laying from Kota Bharu to Ermao, the electric multiple units will soon start 8000 kilometers of fault free operation testing. This is a crucial step towards the opening and operation of the project, reflecting China’s firm commitment to promoting project construction with high quality and high standards.

The Malaysia East Railway Project is the flagship project of China Malaysia cooperation on the “the Belt and Road”, with a design length of more than 600 kilometers. Among them, the section from Kota Bharu to Ermao is the first phase of the project, planned to be put into operation in January 2027.
